Frequently Asked Questions

Does my US Green Card need to be valid to get these travel benefits?+

Yes — your Green Card (Form I-551) must be unexpired at the time of entry. An expired Green Card does not qualify, even if it is being renewed. Some countries also require the card to remain valid for a minimum period (e.g., 6 months) from your entry date.

Does a US B1/B2 tourist visa give the same benefits as a Green Card?+

Many countries extend the same benefit to US visa holders (B1/B2, H-1B, F-1, and others) — including Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Panama, UAE, Bahrain, and Oman. However, conditions vary: Colombia requires the US visa to have 180+ days remaining validity. A Green Card is generally treated more generously and broadly than a temporary US visa.

Do I need to carry both my Indian passport and my Green Card?+

Yes — always carry both. At immigration, you present your Indian passport (the document you are traveling on) and your Green Card (the qualifying document for the benefit). Both must be valid. Never leave your Green Card at home when using this benefit.

Do Schengen countries or the UK recognize my US Green Card?+

No. All Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.) and the UK require Indian passport holders to apply for their respective visas regardless of any foreign residency status. A US Green Card provides no visa advantage for Schengen, UK, Canada, Japan, Singapore, or Australia.

Does the Green Card benefit work at land borders or only airports?+

For most destinations, the benefit applies at all official ports of entry — airports, seaports, and land borders — as long as you carry the required documents. However, some countries (like Bahrain for on-arrival visas) specify that the benefit only applies at their international airport. Check each country's official immigration portal before traveling overland.
